3 Reasons to Start a Sustainable Business

Tree background and text that reads sustainable business.

Humans have changed the world. That is a fact. And now we have to clean up our act in order to save it. That being said, you can probably agree the change needed won’t be successful if it’s not done properly or is not sustainable. In order for society to fully embrace the new reality it has to be a gradual shift instead of an abrupt 180.

This is a real opportunity for entrepreneurs. By bringing in new sustainable products and services the concept can be properly integrated into the marketplace and the benefits can be experienced before it’s too late.

Startups are continuing to maintain a strong presence in the marketplace. In fact startups are responsible for a sizeable percentage of the market’s growth.

If you want to make a real difference and gain a foothold in the business world a sustainable startup is the way to go.

The first reason to start a sustainable startup is this is where the market is going (and where we need it to go). Sustainable businesses are growing faster than their competition (4% vs 1%).

One of the major reasons for this is the continued impact of millennials and generation Z. These younger generations prioritize sustainability and are willing to put their money where their mouths and minds are. When you consider that they will comprise almost 64% of the market in 2019 you can see how important appealing to their mindset and needs really is.

A quality sustainable business is what you need if you want to attract today’s consumers and clients.

The second reason for starting a sustainable business is the potential in the market. If you want to create something that stands out and makes a difference, something that makes people stop to take a second look, a sustainable venture is the way to go. It could be a brand new venture or an eco-twist an old idea. This field holds so much potential for exploration and innovation.

Businesses across the board have seen the need to incorporate SDGs into the company’s vision. The game now becomes: Who can present the best and most innovative ways to meet the SDGs while offering a vital business concept? Answering this riddle is probably the best way to rise to the top of the startup market.

The Global SDG Awards are a great example of the growing power and prominence of SDG startups and businesses. These awards, which will be presented in February 2019, are a great way for a sustainable company to earn prestige, digital branding assets and worldwide recognition.

The third (and most obvious) reason for starting a sustainable business is the fact that this is the right thing to do.

In order for the future to be bright (or even possible) we need to make a change. Big business has been causing major damage since the industrial revolution and we need a better business model to ensure our future.

Sustainable businesses are the future. They’re better for the earth, better for society and better for the business world itself.

Think of what the world will look like once startups harness how to use blockchain to the environment’s advantage (Oxyn) or uncover the solution to our shrinking farmland (Freight Farms).

We need sustainable businesses and we need them to flourish. Let’s hope our best minds agree.

When you look at the potential, purpose and need related to sustainability you can see why it’s important and why we need to embrace it even more.

Imagine a world that’s healthy and supporting our human needs, one that supports all people equally. This is the world we need. And we can get it if we embrace sustainability.
